Cryotherapy FAQ

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy represents the science of using limited (less than 3 minutes) whole-body exposure to extreme sub-zero temperatures (up to -150°C/ -238°F) to help aid in recovery and stimulate physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

Phases and physiology behind the treatments are as followed:

Phase 1 (Removal/Preserve):
3 minutes in our Cryochamber causes the blood vessels in the skin and skeletal muscles to constrict, forcing blood away from the peripheral tissues, resulting in the removal of toxins and inflammation. It's the body's natural filtration system at work.

Phase 2 (Replenishment/ Purify):
Following exiting the cryochamber, filtered blood gradually flows back to the peripheral tissues, providing clean, healthy, and oxygenated blood, enriching the skin and skeletal muscles. The result is that your muscles are ultimately warm-up, increasing range of motion and flexibility.

Phase 3 (Recovery/ Prosper):
Over the next 48 hours, the body is restored to a better state, pain and inflammation are reduced, increased energy is readily apparent, and recovery time is shortened and improved.

Is Cryotherapy Safe?

Yes, Absolutely, Especially When Used Properly.

Our Whole Body Cryochamber, °CRYO Arctic™ , is the safest on the market, producing fully breathable air and consistent temperatures throughout the chamber (and your entire body). To provide you with additional protection for more temperature sensitive body parts, we provide our clients with pairs of dry gloves, socks, and slippers for your use while in the chamber.

The cold exposure is of short duration, generally 2-3 minutes, and easily tolerable, as it represents a “dry cold”. One of our technicians will be in attendance solely with you during your entire session; the chamber door can be opened at any time as well, should the need arise, although this is a very rare event.

The nitrogen gas used to cool our Cryochamber is the same nitrogen that makes up approximately 78% of the air we breathe. However, to ensure your utmost safety, all of our treatment rooms have oxygen monitors. Nitrogen gas is non-toxic and non-flammable.

How Do I Prepare For My Personalized Cryotherapy Session?

We have 3 changing rooms with bathrobes for your convenience. It is generally recommended that clients not enter the Cryochamber with wet clothing. To obtain the greatest benefits from Whole Body Cryotherapy, we recommend that men enter the chamber wearing dry cotton underwear only and having previously removed all jewelry including watches. For women, it is best to enter with a dry bra and panties (or other undergarments) only, again removing all jewelry and anything metallic. All jewelry, such as body piercing, which cannot be removed must be properly covered with provided gauze and tape. Makeup does not need to be removed prior to treatment; however, body lotion should not be applied within 2 hours of a scheduled treatment. Your skin should be dry.

For the typical client, we provide you only with a robe, gloves, socks, and warm slippers; however, ear muffs, hats, and medical face masks, covering the nose and mouth, also are additional options we can provide when needed or requested.

What Are The Risks And Contraindications For Cryotherapy?

As mentioned, Whole Body Cryotherapy is generally well tolerated and has minimal risks. Fluctuations in blood pressure during the treatment session, up to 10 mm (points) systolic, is not uncommon but reverses at the end of the procedure, as the peripheral circulation normalizes. Allergic reactions to extreme cold (very rare), anxiety, and activation of some viral conditions (e.g. cold sores) may occur due to stimulation of the immune system.

Contraindications for cryotherapy include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Severe High Blood Pressure (>180/100)
  • Acute or Recent Stroke
  • Acute or Recent Myocardial Infarction
  • Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease

Why Core Elite Wellness Fit Cryo Is The Best And Safest Choice For Your Cryotherapy Treatments?

We use a state-of-the-art Whole Body Cryochamber, °CRYO Arctic™ , which filters the liquid nitrogen air, producing only fully breathable air in the chamber. Your entire body is exposed, equally and effectively to the same temperatures within the chamber, ensuring that all regions of your body exhibit similar temperature drops, from the head to the feet. The vagus nerve is exposed, for absolute treatment benefits. Importantly, your skin never comes in contact with nitrogen gas, so there is no rick for “freezer burn” from blowing nitrogen air, experienced in some open cryosaunas. The window to our chamber is adjustable and may be lowered, for those who may feel claustrophobic.

Although we do provide primary authentic and science-based real cryotherapy, WHOLE body treatment, should you wish a PARTIAL or targeted body treatment, we utilize our state-of-the-art °CRYO Penguin™ , using safe technology, such as distance control and skin sensors, ensuring that your local therapy also is effective, efficient, and safe!

How Do Clients Feel After Cryotherapy?

Our clients typically feel great and re-energized, likely the result of increased endorphins, improved circulation and decreased inflammation. The effect is generally immediate, often lasting for several hours to up to a few days. Relief from joint pain, muscle tension, and better sleep also are commonly reported, during the 48-72-hour period following a cryotherapy treatment. These effects continue to last and tend to improve with more consecutive treatment sessions.

How Many Cryotherapy Treatments Are Generally Recommended?

More always is better, especially at the beginning. To get the greatest benefits, we recommend a course of at least 6-12 treatments, best done in consecutive and close succession. For example, a typical treatment session may be once every 2 days, averaging about 3 per week. After this initial series of treatments, many people report the ability to maintain their results doing one session every 1-2 weeks. However, if your schedule does not permit these initial closely scheduled treatments (e.g. 3x/week), you will obtain the benefits, even if only once per week… but for the best results, more is better at the beginning! Bear in mind that we will happily personalize your treatments to meet your needs and buy schedule.

What Is The History Of Cryotherapy?

Using cold temperatures for therapy, healing, and recovery has been utilized for centuries, first by the ancient Egyptians, followed by practitioners in the Roman and Greek empires. In fact, Napoleon’s personal surgeon in the Grand Armee, Dominque-Jean Larrey, started using cold applications to help perform amputations during the army’s retreat from Moscow. But it was not until the latter part of the 20th century that physicians began to seriously look at cryotherapy as a legitimate treatment.

Dr. Toshiro Yamauchi, a Japanese rheumatologist, is generally considered the pioneer of modern cryotherapy, as he used freezing sessions in the 1970’s to help reduce pain and inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Yamauchi and colleagues concluded that using a Cryo booth for rapid short-term freezing provided a more beneficial effect on his patients than the gradual cooling that occurred with exposure to an ice bath. At the European Congress on Arthritis in 1981, Yamauchi stated that Whole Body Cryotherapy not only significantly reduced pain and inflammation among his patients suffering from arthritis but also appeared to have a significant healing impact on their bodies. Over the next 3 decades, European physicians and medical professionals in a range of specialties continued to advance the notion of Whole-Body Cryotherapy.

The basic idea behind this type of cold exposure was that it helped reduce inflammation in the soft tissues and skeletal muscle, aiding in recovery. We suspect that most people, at one time or another, have experienced less soft tissue swelling following a pulled muscle or sprained ankle, when they applied an ice pack and/or frozen food. Fast forward to today, advanced cryotherapy chambers are being used to treat and aid in recovery and reduce pain of chronic conditions, including arthritis, enhance performance and recovery for elite and recreational athletes, and improve sleep and general mental and emotional well-being for all.

Who Uses Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is currently used and advertised as a source of recovery and wellness by a variety of athletes and celebrities, including Lebron James, Usain Bolt, Mark Wahlberg, Toni Braxton, Floyd Mayweather, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Aniston. Even sports teams, including but not limited to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Cowboys, have their own cryotherapy equipment housed in their sport facilities and gyms. By improving recovery, regular cryotherapy is not only advantageous to “elite” athletes, but it also may aid recovery in recreational athletes. Individuals suffering from chronic pain may also experience the benefits. At Core Elite Cryo Wellness Fit, LLC, we believe everyone is “Elite” and deserves and opportunity to enjoy the benefits to cryotherapy.
